A Storied Inn Transformed through Time

Royal Hotel Kettering proudly traces its beginnings to the 18th century, starting as a charming inn known as "The White Hart." Over time, this endearing establishment has been carefully reshaped, notably in 1878 when it underwent a comprehensive renovation that enhanced its character. This significant event is permanently commemorated by the date stone embedded on the hotel's northern gable, symbolising not only a redesign of its structure but also a renewal of its spirit.

The transformation of that year was the handiwork of the renowned John Alfred Gotch, a local architect celebrated for his work and knowledge of architectural history. As a former president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Gotch infused Royal Hotel Kettering with a sophistication and intricacy seldom seen in regional hotels of that time. Although how Gotch came to influence our hotel remains a topic of fascination, his impact is undeniable, with the hotel's majestic presence and refined elegance serving as a testament to his visionary approach.

Although we don't have many detailed historical records, the spirit of Royal Hotel Kettering's past shines through the artefacts and documents we've preserved. For instance, the sale documents from 1896, involving the Dukes of Buccleuch, give us a precious glimpse into the original structure of the building before it expanded, sharing clues about the hotel's original size and shape.

Photos from the Historic England Archive show how the hotel adapted early on for car travel, reflecting a tradition of innovation. After 1896, the hotel added brick stables and was among the first to provide spaces for cars. These historical additions were designed to accommodate the travellers of the era, whether they arrived by horse or by car. They embody a long-standing dedication to anticipating and fulfilling the changing requirements of the hotel's guests.

Royal Hotel Kettering is a landmark of history in the heart of the town, with its extended front welcoming everyone at the top of Market Place. Located where High Street meets West Street, our hotel is ready to welcome visitors, offering a chance to experience the rich history that has been preserved within its walls for generations.

From The White Hart to Royal Hotel Kettering: A Legacy Carved in Stone

In 1844, "The White Hart" became Royal Hotel Kettering, marking a celebrated moment in our history with a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This event began a legacy of honour and pride for us. The royal coat of arms, a symbol of that esteemed visit, is prominently displayed on our hotel, serving as a tribute to our regal heritage.

The name Royal Hotel is a constant tribute to this royal connection. The title was adopted following the distinguished visit, reflecting the prestige it brought to our establishment. Historical anecdotes and documents capture the excitement that swept through the town as the royal couple made their way through Northamptonshire that notable November.

A Tapestry of Architectural Marvels

Royal Hotel stands today as the pinnacle of a rich architectural heritage that began with the transformative works of 1878. The remodelling in that year, marked by the date stone on the northern gable, went beyond mere renovation to bestow the hotel with a Victorian spirit, embodying the era's style and sensibilities.

In the tradition of the grand Jacobean style, the hotel's design marries the ornamental with the practical. The brickwork and stonework from the significant remodelling carry the signature of Victorian architectural preferences. Although many attribute the influence of the celebrated local architect John Alfred Gotch to our hotel's design, the exact scope of his contribution to the 1878 transformation remains a subject of historical intrigue.

The facade of the hotel showcases meticulous stonework and elaborate brick patterns, standing as a monument to the period's design philosophy, beckoning guests and onlookers alike to a realm where history is enrobed in lasting allure.

Royal Hotel's unique charm comes from a perfect mix of Victorian elegance, inspired by the Jacobean era, and modern comfort. This combination creates an atmosphere that's both classically beautiful and invitingly up-to-date, offering guests in Kettering a special experience. The design decisions from 1878 enrich every visitor's stay, transforming it into a journey through the rich tapestry of design that defines Royal Hotel.

With its striking red-brick exterior complemented by stone trimmings, Royal Hotel Kettering stands out. The building is crowned by a Dutch gabled, Welsh slate roof, with a detailed cornice and parapet. The rounded bow windows enhance the hotel's intricate look, giving guests a deep sense of history coupled with a chance to admire the magnificent architecture that epitomises the hotel.
