The Vision behind the Lodge
Sir Thomas Tresham (1543-1605) was the mastermind behind this marvellous building. He was a prominent Catholic during Elizabeth I’s Protestant reign and faced numerous hardships due to his faith.
This landowner spent around 15 years in prison for refusing to become a Protestant.
After his release from prison, he designed this lodge to prove that he was still steadfast in his beliefs. The Triangular Lodge is a testament to his ingenuity and unwavering beliefs.
The Triangular Theme
The number three, symbolising the Holy Trinity, dominates every aspect of the lodge’s design.
The structure is a perfect equilateral triangle, with each side measuring 33 feet.
The Lodge features three floors, which are uniquely adorned. The floors are adorned with trefoil windows, triple-lobed designs, and other triadic motifs. Each side of the exterior contains a Biblical verse written in Latin. Over the door, there is also a Latin inscription that reads Tres testimonium dant, which means "The number three bears witness."
Above the inscriptions on each side, the building is topped with three steep gables. The gables have a three-sided obelisk for their crown. There is a triangular chimney at the top, with the holy monogram "IHS," along with symbols of a lamb and cross and a chalice.
